Zachary Ayotte is a photographer and writer based in Edmonton, AB. Grounded in ideas of identity and the Canadian Prairies, his work offers a countervailing theory to depictions of rugged individualism, isolation, ownership, and dominance over nature. His work threads themes of maintenance, care and intimacy together with repression, aggression and loneliness. His aim is to offer a glimpse of the unseen—what these narratives obscure and what could lie beyond them. He draws on aesthetics common to the West and to the Western, employing both a sparseness and a romanticism common to the region and the genre. He was born in the Northwest Territories and has lived in the Prairies for most of his life.
